Harris B. Shumacker Oration

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of Surgery and his dedicated service to the peoiple of Indiana, the Indiana Chapter instituted the Harris B. Shumacker Oration in 1970. Outstanding surgeons from acrjoss the country have given lectures at the Annual Meeting of the Chapter. Dr. Shumacker was a pioneer in vascular and caridac surgery, making his first vascular grafts from parachute silk during World War II. He became the third Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1948 and served in that position until 1968.
