Harris B. Shumacker Oration
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of surgery and his
dedicated service to the people of Indiana, the Indiana Chapter instituted the
Harris B. Shumacker Oration in 1970. Outstanding surgeons from across the country
have given lectures at the Annual Meeting of the Indiana Chapter. Dr. Shumacker
was a pioneer in vascular and cardiac surgery, making his first vascular grafts
from parachute silk during WW II. He was Professor and Chairman of the Department
of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He continues his dedication
to the Indiana Chapter by his attendance at the orations.
