Dear Dr. Inlow

I just wanted to take a minute to fill you in on the Candidate and Associates' meeting at the ACS last week in Chicago.  To begin, the meeting itself was very well attended - There were close to 100 representatives from various College chapters form around the country.  The Chair of the Candidate group is a young surgeon from North Carolina who just finished his Cardiac training.  He informed us how well the Candidate and Associate society is being received by the College as a whole.  Dr. Joe Fischer and several other individuals spoke on the status of medical insurance, HMOs, reimbursement, etc.  The Q&A session afterward generated much discussion - overall, it was a very good session.

We then broke into subspecialty groups to elect members to an executive council.  These members will serve on the subspecialty committees that represent the College.  As a large group, we also discussed the formation of recommendation proposals to the College regarding issues that related to surgical residents.  For example, resident work hours (which has become a real problem in New York because of state laws) and family leave policy.  These discussions were productive as well.  Overall, I believe the Candidate and Associate group is a very good thing.  With the support that is currently building for the group, I see it as a positive addition to the College.  It should, in time, be able to make some real contributions to the good of the College and surgeons as a whole.  If you have any specific questions, please feel free to get  in touch with me, Thanks much.

Sincerely,
Andy Isch
